The US Food and Drug Administration approves the Botox alternative Daxxify for the treatment of wrinkles

  • Federal authorities have approved a new injectable anti-wrinkle treatment.
  • Company officials say Daxxify lasts longer than Botox and has shown fewer effects in clinical trials.
  • Experts say that Daxxify is not the best option for first-time patients who are not sure how their skin will respond to anti-wrinkle treatments.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Botox for a long time.

An injectable anti-wrinkle drug called Daxxify, developed by Revance Therapeutics, Inc.

According to company officials, Daxxify is the first injectable facial drug that shows results that usually last up to 6 months. They add that this means that in two meetings in the last year, wrinkles can be prevented and treated.

Recall officials said data from a recent Phase III clinical trial in the treatment of forehead wrinkles indicate that Daxxify is well tolerated and has a sufficiently high patient response rate.

Clinical trials included 2,700 participants and approximately 4,200 treatments. Among the related events:

  • Results already one day after treatment (usually visible within two days)
  • 98% of subjects showed no signs of wrinkles at follow-up after 4 weeks of treatment.
  • 88% of subjects showed clinically significant improvement in wrinkles at a 4-week follow-up.

The effects of neuromodulators or other toxins such as Botox, Xeomin, and Jiufu last about three months, according to the American Society for Dermatological Surgery (ASDS).

Experts say there are pros and cons to longer facial strokes.

Determine what is best for you

Experts agree that before undergoing facial wrinkle injections, you should know which ones you choose and which ones work.

Daxxify and Botox are not the same injectable treatment system.

Daxxify is the first peptide-based formula on the market. According to company officials, Daxxify is also unique in that it contains no human blood protein (serum albumin) and no animal ingredients.

"Learn what anti-wrinkle facial injections are and how they work," advises Adam Tinklebaugh, MD, a Mohs dermatologist, plastic surgeon, and skin cancer surgeon.

"Most anti-wrinkle injections are botulinum toxin, hence the name Botox," he told Healthline.

Tinklepow explains that there are several different types of injectable botulinum toxins, each with different properties, but all of which work to inactivate (that is, immobilize or stiffen) the muscles that cause wrinkles.

"It's important to ask your doctor which type is best for you to get the result you want," he said.

Dr. Brendan Kemp, a dermatologist, and dermatologist explained that neurotoxins treat dynamic lines, which are lines that appear when the facial muscles move.

"It can also help smooth out rough lines embedded in the skin, but these neurotoxin lines usually disappear completely after the neurotoxin treatment because they've been etched into the skin over time from frequent facial movements," Healthy line said.

Kemp adds that the shorter duration of treatment can be a "blessing" because side effects such as drooping eyelids disappear more quickly.

On the other hand, he points out that a shorter duration also means "time, money, and breakdown."

Ptosis was observed in 2% of study participants, according to a release from Revance. Other side effects such as headache and facial asymmetry occurred in 1% to 6% of participants.

Mahana recommends choosing a provider, for example, B. A dermatologist qualified by experience in the use of neurotoxins. He also recommends educating yourself about neurotoxins and discussing their uses with your doctor.

TJ Tsay, MD, medical director of Ageless MD in Orange County, California, adds that consumers should not expect Daxxify to cost as much as Botox.

"Obviously, people expect this product more than Botox because of the longevity benefit, so don't think it's cheap," he told Healthline.

What you should know about the faces of actors

Tsai is not sure he would recommend Daxxify to new patients.

"I'm not sure I would use Daxxify for someone who has never had neurotoxins before because you never know how they will react or their sensitivity to the amount of the drug," he said.

"Maybe if someone has been on Botox for a while and knows the exact dose and injection site, they can try Daxxify to see if they get a better result," Tsai said.

"One way that anyone can benefit from new neurotoxin treatments is to try to shorten the time so they can get a sense of how they look and feel after treatment," Kemp added.

"It provides a good experience of choosing between shorter and longer lasting products," he added.
